My name is Nalutaya Shakirah, a PhD candidate at the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR), Makerere University. This website serves as a space to share my academic journey, research work, and intellectual interests with fellow scholars, students, and anyone curious about the intersections of politics, culture, and thought.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Education, with a major in History and Islamic Studies. Fascinated by knowledge, I was driven to pursue further studies at the Makerere Institute of Social Research (MISR), where I earned a Master of Philosophy in Social Studies. This academic foundation nurtured my passion for critical inquiry and inspired me to embark on further research focused on decolonial and post-colonial theory, the rich intellectual heritage of Islamic thought, secularism, and the evolving nature of the modern state.
My current doctoral research offers an in-depth examination of the secular state through political and cultural lenses, using Islamic thought as a critical and decolonial framework to question dominant narratives of governance, identity, and modernity. Through this work, I seek to contribute to broader conversations on knowledge production, power, and alternative ways of thinking beyond inherited colonial frameworks.
